New Delhi, April 3: In today’s fast-paced life, excessive gadget use and work pressure significantly impact our minds. This leads to increased stress and difficulty in maintaining focus. In such scenarios, the ‘Shambhavi Mudra’ offers a simple yet effective solution.
In this practice, the practitioner attempts to fix their gaze on the space between the eyebrows. Although this exercise appears straightforward, its effects are profound. It calms the mind, reduces stress, and enhances cognitive function.
According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Shambhavi Mudra is an ancient, powerful yogic technique that involves stabilizing the eyes and concentrating on the center of the eyebrows (the third eye). It is practiced to calm the mind, improve concentration, and experience higher states of consciousness.
It is believed that practicing Shambhavi Mudra balances the flow of energy in the body, ascending from the root chakra to the Ajna chakra (third eye). This mudra reduces cortisol (the stress hormone), increases BDNF (brain health), and aids in enhancing concentration.
The practice is quite simple. To perform it, sit in a quiet place in Sukhasana, Siddhasana, or on a chair with a straight back. Place your hands on your knees in Gyan Mudra (thumb and index finger touching). Keep your eyes open and focus your gaze on the center between your eyebrows. Maintain normal breathing and avoid letting your mind wander.
Start with 5 to 10 minutes daily, gradually increasing to 21 minutes. It is advisable to practice it slowly at first. If you experience eye strain, stop immediately.
Avoid practicing if you have cataracts, glaucoma, or have recently undergone eye surgery. Initially, limit your practice to just 1 to 2 minutes. If you feel a headache, close your eyes and rest immediately.
