Delhi Police Arrest Six More in Turkman Gate Violence Case

New Delhi: Delhi Police on Thursday arrested six more individuals in connection with the violence that erupted during the demolition drive near Faiz-e-Ilahi Masjid in the Turkman Gate area.

With these latest arrests, the total number of people detained in this case has risen to eleven. Earlier, on Wednesday, five people were taken into custody for their involvement in stone-pelting during the removal of encroachments near the mosque.

Authorities had previously identified 30 suspects involved in the violence through CCTV footage, recordings from police personnel’s body-worn cameras, and several viral videos from the area.

Delhi Police officials stated that a notice will soon be issued to Samajwadi Party MP Mohibullah Nadvi, who is alleged to have been present at the site before the violence broke out. Police had requested the MP to stay away from the location, but he reportedly remained nearby prior to the incident.

The police are also intensifying their search for YouTuber Salman, who is accused of using social media platforms to incite unrest. He is alleged to have called local residents to gather at the site during the demolition drive.

Further investigation revealed that some influential individuals in the area allegedly urged residents via WhatsApp groups to assemble, aiming to create disturbance during the operation and obstruct the work of the administration and law enforcement agencies.

The First Information Report (FIR) obtained by the news agency details the sequence of events, starting from the police barricading the encroached land to the inflammatory slogans raised by about a dozen locals, followed by stone-throwing at police officers.

Police personnel tried to explain to the residents that the demolition was limited to illegal constructions and unauthorised occupation of government land, assuring them that the nearby mosque would not be affected.

According to the FIR, at around 12:40 pm, when police began setting up barricades, a group of 30 to 35 people gathered at the spot, raised slogans, and prevented police from sealing off the area.

The investigation into this case is ongoing.
