New Delhi, April 28: The fifth special session of the Delhi Assembly began on Tuesday, with heightened security measures in place. Several critical issues are being discussed in the house.
During the session, BJP legislators arrived with black bands on their arms to protest the recent rejection of the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha. Under Rule 280, they are raising concerns about local issues while wearing these bands. Following this, the assembly will discuss the Nari Shakti Vandan Act.
The house observed a moment of silence for the passing of renowned playback singer Asha Bhosle. Additionally, legislators paid tribute to Indian soldiers who fell in World War I. Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta noted that exactly 108 years ago, on April 28, 1918, a historic war conference took place in this very chamber, attended by 120 representatives from across the country.
Minister Pravesh Verma addressed reporters regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill, stating, “Today marks a special session of the Delhi Assembly. The opposition unitedly opposed the Nari Shakti Vandan Act in the Indian Parliament. The Prime Minister has worked for years to ensure the voices of women, who were previously unheard, reach the Parliament. The dreams of millions of women have been shattered by the opposition. Today, a condemnation motion will be introduced to convey that our party and government stand with the women of Delhi and the nation.”
Minister Kapil Mishra added, “This special session is significant. The Parliament had a historic opportunity to express gratitude and respect towards the women of the nation. The Chief Minister will present a proposal addressing the betrayal faced by women. This will be discussed in the house today.”
Mishra further stated, “Today is a one-day special session, and the Chief Minister will present a proposal. This was a historic opportunity to honor the women of the nation, and the broken trust will be thoroughly discussed.”
BJP legislator Abhay Verma expressed, “The Chief Minister will present a condemnation motion. I believe all women in Delhi are very disappointed. Since the Chief Minister also oversees the Women and Child Welfare Department, their sentiments will be expressed through her.”
Legislator Harish Khurana remarked, “The opposition has denied women their rights regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill. Prime Minister Modi intended to allocate 850 seats for women by 2029, but the opposition has obstructed this right. The people of Delhi and the nation will not tolerate this. This session has been called for this reason. A condemnation motion will be introduced and passed. The BJP will work to ensure women receive their rights.”
Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated, “The Congress has deprived half of India’s population of their rights. For years, they have claimed they would bring in reservations. Today, a condemnation motion will be introduced against the betrayal of half the population. Women’s reservation is essential. It is crucial to grant our sisters and daughters their rights.”
Before the one-day special session, BJP legislators, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, protested the failure to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament.
