Delhi Approves Rs 327 Crore Schemes for Slum Development

New Delhi: On the occasion of Republic Day, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta convened representatives from all slum settlements across the city at the Chief Minister Janseva Sadan. During the event, she inaugurated fundamental development works in these areas and approved schemes worth approximately Rs 327 crore, including awarding contracts worth Rs 144 crore.

Commitment to Improving Slum Residents’ Lives

The Chief Minister joined the slum representatives for lunch and expressed the government’s earnest dedication to enhancing the quality of life for people living in slums. She noted that previous administrations treated slum dwellers merely as vote banks and maintained an environment of fear. In contrast, the current government aims to provide respect and improved amenities to these communities.

A notable aspect of the ceremony was the participation of many women representatives from slum areas. The approved projects include the construction of public utility complexes and concrete (CC) paved roads in slum lanes. The Chief Minister engaged in detailed discussions regarding the issues and needs of slum residents and assured that the Delhi government is fully committed to raising their living standards. She contrasted the past leadership’s luxurious lifestyles with the present government’s dedication to serving people’s struggles day and night.

Dedicated Budget and Planned Development Initiatives

The Chief Minister acknowledged the crucial contribution of workers living in slums to Delhi’s growth. The government’s objective is to ensure that development benefits reach even the most marginalized sections of society. She shared that a dedicated budget of Rs 700 crore has been allocated for slum development, accelerating work related to basic infrastructure, housing, health, sanitation, and social welfare.

Rekha Gupta outlined a well-structured plan to address essential needs in slum areas, including drainage systems, roads, toilets, parks, and community development centres, aiming to free residents from inhumane conditions. She emphasized that these developmental works have been prioritised and are being implemented swiftly. The Chief Minister found it especially inspiring to inaugurate these projects by sharing meals with slum residents and involving them directly.

New Welfare Schemes and Government’s Vision

The Chief Minister also highlighted several key welfare initiatives recently launched for slum communities. Facilities such as Atal Canteen, Ayushman Arogya Mandir, and dedicated health and nutrition services, which were previously unavailable, are now being provided by the Delhi government. She mentioned that the ‘double engine’ government under the BJP is committed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas’ and is fully resolved to follow this mantra.
