Education Minister Discusses NEP 2020 Outcomes with Goa Chief Minister

New Delhi, June 7: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan met with Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday to discuss the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

In a statement, Pradhan expressed his pleasure in meeting Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant. They had meaningful discussions aimed at strengthening the implementation of NEP 2020 and expanding skill development opportunities for the youth of Goa.

Pradhan emphasized the importance of promoting quality education and effectively developing the state’s human resources through continued collaboration.

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 serves as a comprehensive framework for significant reforms in India’s education system. Based on five pillars—accessibility, equity, quality, affordability, and accountability—this policy replaces the 1986 framework while introducing multidisciplinary education, vocational integration, and structural academic flexibility.

Earlier, Pradhan addressed a conference of vice-chancellors of central universities, discussing the review, evaluation, and implementation strategies since the launch of NEP 2020.

The efforts of the Union Ministry of Education aim to bolster and highlight the institutional progress of central universities in promoting the vision of a developed India by 2047.

While addressing the vice-chancellors, Pradhan noted that the higher education system in India has undergone fundamental changes over the past decade, making it more flexible, interdisciplinary, inclusive, and innovation-driven.

As a result, total student enrollment has reached 44.6 million, marking a 30% increase since 2014-15. Female enrollment has risen by 38%, with the female gross enrollment ratio (GER) now surpassing that of males.

Pradhan also mentioned that PhD enrollments have nearly doubled, with a 136% increase in the number of female PhD researchers. The GER for Scheduled Tribes has increased by 10 percentage points, while for Scheduled Castes, it has risen by over 8 percentage points.

This reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive education and social justice. He further noted that as a result of positive policy initiatives, over 1,200 universities and more than 46,000 colleges have been established, making India one of the largest education systems globally.
