Cyber Crime Unit Arrests Key Suspect in ₹85 Lakh Fraud Case

Noida, May 19: The Gautam Buddh Nagar police’s cyber crime team has apprehended a key suspect linked to a fraud scheme involving ₹85 lakh through a digital arrest. The suspect was arrested in Gurugram, Haryana.

During the investigation, police discovered that the accused was a POS agent for a mobile company. He activated an Indian SIM card as an e-SIM and provided it to cybercriminals operating from Cambodia. This SIM was then used to defraud individuals under the guise of a digital arrest.

According to police, the investigation into a case registered at the Noida Cyber Crime police station revealed that the victim was threatened by individuals posing as police, CBI, and other central agency officials. They coerced him into paying ₹85 lakh by threatening a digital arrest.

Given the seriousness of the case, the cyber police initiated an investigation using electronic surveillance and manual intelligence. They uncovered that the mobile number used in the digital arrest scam was an Indian SIM activated as an e-SIM by a POS agent.

Based on technical evidence, police tracked down the suspect and arrested him on May 18 in Gurugram. The arrested individual has been identified as Suraj, son of Phool Singh, a resident of Panipat, Haryana. He is 26 years old and has completed the 10th grade.

Police stated that the suspect, lured by greed, activated the Indian SIM for use abroad, which was then exploited by cybercriminals in Cambodia to execute serious cyber crimes like digital arrest. A case has been registered under the IT Act at the Gautam Buddh Nagar Cyber Crime police station.

Authorities are now searching for other members of this gang and trying to determine who else is involved in this network. Police have urged the public not to trust anyone demanding money while posing as police, CBI, or ED officials. They also advised against accepting unknown links, screen sharing apps, or mobile access requests and warned against sharing confidential information such as OTPs, bank details, UPI PINs, and passwords.
