New Delhi, April 26: The Punjab government, led by Bhagwant Mann, withdrew security for former Indian cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh on Sunday. This decision was quickly overturned after intervention from the central government. Harbhajan Singh has now been assigned ‘Y Category’ security by the CRPF.
In addition to Singh, Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Mittal has also been granted ‘Y Category’ security due to concerns regarding their safety.
Recently, Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha announced his switch from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Chadha mentioned that he, along with six other MPs, would be joining the BJP, including Harbhajan Singh.
During a press conference, Chadha revealed that the seven MPs leaving AAP include himself, Sandeep Pathak, Ashok Mittal, Harbhajan Singh, Swati Maliwal, and Rajendra Gupta.
Notably, AAP recently removed Raghav Chadha from his position as Deputy Leader and appointed Dr. Ashok Mittal as the new Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha. Mittal has been an MP since April 2022 and has served on several parliamentary committees.
Chadha’s announcement has intensified the political atmosphere, prompting party workers to protest outside the residences of Harbhajan Singh and Ashok Mittal. During the protests, effigies were burned, and slogans were shouted, leading security agencies to heighten their alertness. The CRPF has been deployed outside the homes of both Singh and Mittal to prevent any untoward incidents.
Currently, political turmoil continues within the Aam Aadmi Party. The shifting allegiances of several key leaders have stirred significant activity in Punjab and Delhi’s political landscape.
