New Delhi, August 13: The political landscape in Uttar Pradesh has heated up following statements from Samajwadi Party (SP) MPs. Senior party members reacted to a comment made by SP legislator Shivpal Singh Yadav, who suggested that if the SP forms the government in Uttar Pradesh, Azam Khan could be appointed as Home Minister.
SP MP Javed Ali Khan described the meeting between Azam Khan and Shivpal Singh Yadav as a normal political occurrence. He emphasized that both are senior leaders of the party, and it is not unusual for them to meet periodically. Regarding the possibility of Azam Khan becoming Home Minister, he noted that Shivpal Yadav is one of the key policymakers in the party. According to him, both Shivpal and SP President Akhilesh Yadav are capable of making decisions they deem appropriate.
Javed Ali Khan also hinted at Shivpal Yadav’s significant role in this matter. He stated that Shivpal is a senior and competent leader, making him a potential candidate for any position. His remarks indicate that the final decision regarding Azam Khan’s possible role will depend on future political circumstances and leadership choices.
SP MP Avadhesh Prasad highlighted Azam Khan’s stature and respect within the party. He mentioned that Azam Khan has always been honored in the SP, from the leadership of Mulayam Singh Yadav to that of Akhilesh Yadav. Avadhesh Prasad noted that Azam Khan has held significant responsibilities in various governments and has consistently been respected by the party.
However, when asked about the prospect of Azam Khan being appointed as a minister, Avadhesh Prasad stated that the decision of who to include in the cabinet falls under the Chief Minister‘s jurisdiction. He pointed out that during the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) government, Azam Khan faced significant harassment and attempts to politically undermine him. In contrast, the SP has continuously advocated for his respect and rights.
Meanwhile, SP MPs have leveled serious allegations against the government regarding actions taken against student protests. Avadhesh Prasad claimed that students faced firing, baton charges, and the use of tear gas. Students from across the country had gathered at Jantar Mantar for nearly a month to protest peacefully. He asserted that thousands of students were injured, with many suffering broken limbs during the demonstrations.
Avadhesh Prasad emphasized that the SP has always fought for the rights of students and youth, both on the streets and in Parliament. He mentioned his and the party leadership’s participation in protests, noting that Akhilesh Yadav was also arrested. He stated that students and youth are the nation’s assets, and the fight for their respect and rights will continue.
In the context of parliamentary proceedings, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sougata Roy also criticized the government. He stated that it is the government’s responsibility to run the house, not the opposition’s. The government’s role is to persuade the opposition and prepare them for discussions.
Sougata Roy commented on Home Minister Amit Shah’s speech, indicating that the opposition did not want to hear a lengthy address but sought clear answers to important questions from the government. He specifically raised concerns about the orders to use pellet guns. Sougata Roy demanded to know who authorized the firing with pellet guns, but the government did not provide a clear response.
He alleged that despite having sufficient power, the government failed to manage the house effectively. Additionally, he questioned the government’s urgency to discuss matters just before the session’s conclusion.
