Thiruvananthapuram, May 20: In a significant shift within the CPI(M), the party’s internal dynamics have erupted into open criticism following a disappointing performance in the recent assembly elections. Former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and state secretary M.V. Govindan are facing backlash during district committee meetings.
Party insiders are particularly shocked by the intensity and personal nature of the attacks on Vijayan. He has been the only leader in Kerala to wield unchecked authority over the party and government for nearly a decade.
During a meeting at the Thiruvananthapuram district secretariat, leaders openly attributed the party’s disconnect with the electorate to Vijayan’s arrogance, his image of being distant from the common people, and his confrontational demeanor.
Several members have alleged that Vijayan’s leadership style alienated the public, as his press conferences increasingly reflected impatience and intolerance rather than confidence.
The most pointed and politically symbolic remarks came from Govindan himself. Attempting to explain the scale of criticism directed at Vijayan, he reportedly mentioned that even Vijayan’s own son had questioned his father’s demeanor and press conference conduct.
Leaders also criticized the atmosphere surrounding the former Chief Minister’s office, claiming it had become nearly impossible for party workers and the public to access it.
Concerns were raised regarding why Vijayan was exempted from age-related party rules when many senior leaders and even state committee members were denied the opportunity to contest elections.
Vijayan’s cabinet colleagues, M.B. Rajesh and Veena George, are also under scrutiny. Leaders have labeled their performance and ministerial work as significant weaknesses for the party.
Within CPI(M) circles, senior leaders privately acknowledge that Vijayan and Govindan have never faced such direct, widespread, and emotionally charged criticism from within the organization before.
For a party known for its strict discipline and control over dissent, these post-defeat meetings are revealing deep-seated discontent and may signal the beginning of a significant struggle over accountability and the party’s future direction.
