Harare, July 1: Former West Indies fast bowler Courtney Walsh has been appointed as the bowling coach for the Zimbabwe senior men’s cricket team. This announcement was made by Zimbabwe Cricket on Wednesday.
Zimbabwe Cricket stated that it has accepted the recommendations from the cricket committee led by Blessing Muzarabani, which includes retaining the senior men’s team’s support staff under head coach Justin Samons.
Tavengwa Mukuhlani, chairman of Zimbabwe Cricket, expressed confidence in the team’s new structure, stating, “We believe they represent a strong blend of experience, expertise, continuity, and fresh perspectives that will help advance our strategic objectives for national teams and player pathway structures.”
Courtney Walsh has been active in coaching for several years. Recently, he served as a bowling consultant for Zimbabwe during the T20 World Cup co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Under his guidance, Zimbabwe topped Group B and reached the Super 8 stage. His impactful changes to the bowling unit led to his promotion from consultant to full-time coach.
Walsh previously worked as Bangladesh’s bowling coach under a three-year contract starting in September 2016. After Chandika Hathurusingha’s resignation, he was appointed interim head coach in February 2018. In October 2020, he took on the role of head coach for the West Indies women’s team, but his contract was not renewed after the 2023 T20 World Cup.
Regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers in cricket history, Walsh took 519 wickets in 132 Test matches from 1984 to 2001. He was the first bowler to achieve 500 wickets in Test cricket. Additionally, he has 227 wickets in 205 One Day Internationals.
