New Delhi, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : A significant ruling came from the Patiala House Court in New Delhi regarding the building collapse in Satya Niketan. The court has denied bail to the accused building owner, Hari Ram Gupta. The judge emphasized that the investigation is still in its early stages and the charge sheet has not yet been filed, making it inappropriate to grant bail at this time.
During the hearing, Gupta’s lawyer argued for bail citing the defendant’s age and health issues. The lawyer noted that Gupta is elderly and suffers from multiple health conditions, claiming he had no direct involvement in the building’s daily operations.
The court dismissed these arguments, stating that while Gupta claims to be disconnected from the building, the records tell a different story. The court pointed out that the building’s electricity connection remains registered in Gupta’s name. Additionally, several witnesses have indicated his involvement in both the construction and ongoing work at the site.
The court also highlighted that the building generated over one lakh rupees in monthly rent. Given this income, a thorough investigation into the maintenance and repair expenditures of the property is necessary. The case involves allegations of negligence, and the court stressed the importance of uncovering the full extent of the matter.
Regarding Gupta’s health concerns, the court acknowledged their significance but noted that there is currently no medical emergency that would prevent his care in judicial custody. The court instructed the jail superintendent to ensure that Gupta receives all necessary medications in a timely manner and that his health is monitored.
This incident occurred on September 12, when a portion of an old building collapsed, resulting in the tragic deaths of seven individuals, including five students and two laborers. Several others sustained injuries. Reports indicate that the building was in a dilapidated state and had been subject to illegal construction.
Following the incident, the Delhi police arrested Hari Ram Gupta, his wife Urmila Gupta, and their son Mahesh Gupta on September 7. They face charges of involuntary manslaughter and negligence.
