Controversy Surrounds Rebel TMC MPs Merger with NCPI, Founder Shantanu Dey Voices Concerns

Barasat, June 15: The potential merger of rebel TMC MPs with the Nationalist Congress Party India (NCPI) has sparked controversy. Shantanu Dey, the party’s founder, stated that there was no discussion regarding this decision with him or several senior leaders of the party. According to Dey, most party members are unhappy with this development, emphasizing the need for a collective meeting before any decisions are made.

Dey remarked, “In 2022, I, along with some friends and other leaders, decided to establish a new political party. Our goal was to advocate for people’s rights and raise their voices nationwide. We held meetings and outlined the organization. I began the groundwork in Tripura, where we launched a campaign to connect with the people, leading to gradual expansion. The party was officially registered in 2023.”

He added, “Regarding the news of rebel TMC MPs joining NCPI, I learned about it through social media and other party leaders. A party does not belong to one individual; it comprises many members and officials. I was informed about this matter via phone calls from party leaders.”

Dey continued, “As the party’s founder, I established the organization in Tripura, selected the party symbol, designed the flag, wrote the constitution, and developed the organizational structure. However, the person appointed as party president made this decision without consulting me, other leaders, the legal cell, or spokespersons.”

He noted, “I saw in the news that they met with Om Birla. According to media reports, it was mentioned that if no objections arise within the stipulated time, further processes could be considered.”

Dey explained that most party members believe that any significant decision should involve collective discussions. There is also a need for group deliberation regarding potential affiliations with new members. No final or official decision has been made yet. He stated that many members are dissatisfied with this situation as their opinions were not sought. If TMC leaders wish to engage in dialogue, they are open to discussions. However, any decision will adhere to the party’s constitution and collective agreement. Such decisions will be publicly shared only after all members and officials have reached a consensus.

Dey emphasized that the party does not belong to one individual but to all its members and the public. Therefore, the way forward will be determined only after discussions with all relevant parties.

He mentioned that in the 2023 Tripura Assembly elections, the party fielded seven candidates. Of these, three candidates had their nominations accepted and contested the elections, while the remaining four could not progress due to various political circumstances.

Dey stated, “I have always supported the NDA. We aim to reach areas where the BJP cannot and work for the people. We have previously been involved in social and public welfare activities. Our goal is to protect people’s rights and reach out to marginalized communities.” He added that if PM Modi or CM Suvendu Adhikari invites them, they will certainly attend.
