Thiruvananthapuram, August 24: A significant controversy is unfolding within the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala regarding the position of Deputy Leader of Opposition. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], which leads the LDF, is facing increasing pressure from its second-largest ally, the Communist Party of India (CPI), to address this issue.
CPI National General Secretary D. Raja has publicly stated that LDF President and former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan cannot ignore the demands of allied parties and must consider their concerns. Raja’s involvement is seen as crucial, as the dispute over the Deputy Leader of Opposition position has escalated beyond a mere internal matter between CPI(M) and CPI, becoming a topic of public discussion.
The CPI leadership is preparing to raise Vijayan’s public stance before the LDF leadership, shifting the conversation from bilateral discussions to a broader dialogue. This development signals a growing rift between the two major parties in the left alliance.
CPI is advocating for its state secretary, Binoy Viswam, to be appointed as Deputy Leader of Opposition. Viswam has repeatedly voiced this demand in public forums. However, Pinarayi Vijayan has categorically rejected this request, stating that it cannot be accepted.
The controversy intensified when Vijayan publicly acknowledged that the CPI had sent a letter regarding this position. In response, Viswam sharply criticized Vijayan, asserting that their demand is entirely justified and that the former Chief Minister should demonstrate greater maturity in handling the matter. With D. Raja’s intervention, CPI’s position has gained national support.
Sources indicate that other coalition partners are also dissatisfied with the handling of this impasse. As the government marks its 100 days in office, the issue of the Deputy Leader of Opposition is becoming increasingly politically significant. Many believe that this controversy is contributing to a lack of coordination in opposition activities.
CPI’s state leadership is now preparing to adopt a firmer stance against Pinarayi Vijayan as LDF President, while also hoping for intervention from the national leadership of the left parties to resolve the deadlock.
