Shalimar Bagh, Delhi, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : In a heated response to the recent demolition of a mosque in Shalimar Bagh, Delhi, Waris Pathan, spokesperson for the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimin (AIMIM), condemned the government’s actions. He claimed that the mosque was destroyed under the cover of darkness, despite the ongoing legal proceedings regarding the site.
Pathan accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of initiating what he termed “Operation Muslim” and “Operation Mosque.” He highlighted that the demolition occurred at night, prompting immediate concerns from party leaders, including Delhi’s AIMIM president, Shoaib Jamai, who sought access to the site. Initially, police barred their entry, but after Jamai staged a sit-in, authorities allowed them to proceed.
The AIMIM team managed to retrieve religious items, including the Quran and prayer mats, from inside the mosque. Pathan questioned the rationale behind such actions, emphasizing that a case is still pending in court. He also referenced similar demolitions of mosques in Saharanpur, suggesting a pattern of targeting religious sites.
On the topic of discrepancies surrounding the Special Investigation Report (SIR) from the Election Commission, Pathan insisted that these claims should be taken seriously. He asserted that any objections raised by election commissioners must be addressed publicly, as the right to vote is a constitutional entitlement, not a privilege. He warned that any unjust removal of names from voter lists or restrictions on voting rights is a grave concern.
Pathan clarified that his intention is not to disenfranchise legitimate voters but to demand accountability from the government and the Election Commission regarding the ongoing issues surrounding the SIR.
Regarding a petition in the Supreme Court related to Muslim Personal Law and equal inheritance rights for women, Pathan stated he has yet to review the document. As a lawyer, he expressed the need to understand the petition’s arguments before forming an opinion.
He concluded by emphasizing the respect afforded to mothers in Islam, noting that the faith teaches that paradise lies beneath a mother’s feet.
