Patna, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : The Janata Dal (United) has announced the commencement of a public awareness campaign regarding the Farakka Water Treaty and its implications for Bihar’s water resources. Sanjay Kumar Jha, the national executive president of JD(U) and a Member of Parliament, stated that the party will embark on a tour across 12 districts under the “Nitish Samvad” program. The initiative aims to inform residents about the injustices faced by Bihar and the adverse effects of the Farakka Barrage and the water treaty.
During a press conference, Jha emphasized the importance of reaching out to the community. He, along with JD(U) state president Ramesh Kushwaha, will highlight the severe injustices Bihar has endured and the significant losses incurred over the past 30 years due to the treaty. With the treaty set to expire this December, Jha reiterated the party’s longstanding opposition to the Farakka Barrage and the existing treaty. He asserted that it should not be extended in its current form. If alternatives are considered, they must address Bihar’s water concerns with a view to the state’s needs up to 2050.
Jha further explained that the campaign’s primary goal is to educate the public on issues pertinent to Bihar’s interests. The JD(U) claims that the Farakka Water Treaty has caused extensive damage to the state for nearly three decades. He reiterated that the party’s position is clear: the treaty should not be renewed in its present state.
Additionally, Jha mentioned that if a new arrangement is contemplated, it should prioritize Bihar’s interests, particularly addressing the state’s water-related challenges and future requirements.
In a related development, BJP state president Sanjay Sarawagi responded to comments made by the Mayor of Buckingham regarding Kashmir, stating that foreign officials have no right to comment on India’s internal matters. He reaffirmed that Jammu and Kashmir, along with Ladakh, are integral parts of India, and there should be no debate on this matter.
On the issue of the case involving independent Bhardwaj, Sarawagi criticized the politicization of the incident along caste lines, urging political parties to refrain from exploiting such matters for political gain.
Furthermore, Sarawagi announced the expansion of medical education in Bihar, revealing that Sri Ram Janaki College in Samastipur and Chapra Medical College have received approval for 50 MBBS seats each. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for their support, highlighting that these approvals will enhance medical education opportunities and benefit the healthcare sector in the state.
