Kolkata, 23 August (Kiran News). Unseasonal weather just before Durga Puja has impacted festival preparations in Kolkata and several districts of West Bengal. Due to a cyclonic system over Gangetic West Bengal and Bangladesh, a new low-pressure area is likely to develop on Monday. According to the Meteorological Department, this will be the eighth low-pressure system formed in the Bay of Bengal this year.

Continuous rainfall over the past two months has set a new record this year. Data shows that between 1 June and 22 August, Kolkata received 1,135 millimetres of rain, while Howrah recorded 1,250 millimetres. The weather office has strictly warned fishermen not to venture into the sea until Saturday evening. Fishermen along the Bengal and Odisha coasts have also been advised to exercise special caution.
During the month of Bhadra, when humidity and sweating usually trouble people, this year the sky has been turning dark almost daily, bringing heavy showers. This has affected Durga Puja preparations. Potters are facing great difficulties in making idols, and pandal construction is also being hampered. Organisers and artisans are now asking only one question—when will the rain stop?
On Saturday, the sky over Kolkata is expected to remain mostly cloudy throughout the day. There is a possibility of light to moderate rain with thunder. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 29 degrees Celsius, while the minimum will be about 26.6 degrees Celsius.
Due to the effect of the low-pressure system, a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for several districts of South Bengal on Saturday. Bankura, Purulia, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, Birbhum, and South 24 Parganas are likely to receive heavy rain. Murshidabad, Nadia, East and West Bardhaman, North and South 24 Parganas could also see strong rainfall.
In North Bengal, scattered heavy rainfall is expected on Saturday. Winds during rain and thunderstorms may reach speeds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour. Heavy rain is also forecast for Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts.
