New Delhi, February 3: Congress MP Sukdev Bhagat has raised concerns regarding the India-US trade agreement. He expressed disappointment that announcements related to trade and ceasefire are being made by US President Donald Trump.
In an interview with a news agency, Bhagat stated, “There is not much to celebrate. Our tariff was previously 3-4 percent, and now if we are happy with it being 18 percent, that is surprising.”
He further questioned, “It is unfortunate that any decision regarding India is announced by the US President. Has the Indian government authorized him to make these announcements, or has India ceased to be a sovereign nation?”
Bhagat criticized the Indian government for appearing pleased with Trump’s announcements. He remarked, “There is no greater irony than the President of the United States announcing decisions related to a sovereign country.”
Previously, the Congress party targeted the central government after the trade deal was announced. They posted on the social media platform X, stating, “Just like the ceasefire, the trade deal was also announced by Trump. It was mentioned that the deal is being made at the ‘request of the government.’ Trump claims that India will reduce tariffs and non-tariff barriers to zero. This means you have opened the entire market for America, which will severely harm Indian industries. You have abandoned local traders and farmers.”
The Congress party questioned, “What deal has been made regarding opening the agricultural sector to the US? Have our farmers’ interests been considered, or have they been neglected? How will the safety of our farmers be ensured? It has also been stated that Modi will not buy oil from Russia but will purchase it from the US and Venezuela. Has the Modi government agreed to abandon Russia in this trade deal? Furthermore, it has been mentioned that more goods will be purchased from the US. If that is the case, what happened to ‘Make in India’?”
The Congress party emphasized that the public has the right to know the details of the trade deal and urged the government to share all relevant information with the nation and Parliament.
However, the Shiv Sena (UBT), a Congress ally in the India coalition, praised the India-US trade deal. MP Priyanka Chaturvedi stated, “This has been a historic deal for the US. Although the complete details are not yet known in our country, if we read Trump’s post, he has reduced the tariffs he previously imposed from 50 percent to 18 percent. Additionally, non-tariff barriers on Indian products have been removed.”
