Chennai, March 14: As the Tamil Nadu assembly elections approach, political activities in the state are intensifying. Chief Minister and DMK President M.K. Stalin held a significant meeting on Saturday with VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan regarding seat-sharing arrangements.
This meeting took place at the Chief Minister’s residence in Alwarpet, Chennai. The VCK, or Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, is one of the key allied parties in the ruling coalition led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) under the Secular Progressive Alliance.
Sources indicate that preliminary discussions on seat-sharing had already occurred between the two parties prior to the high-level meeting on Saturday. This dialogue is part of the process to finalize seat allocations with coalition partners before the Election Commission announces the election dates.
Political insiders report that the DMK initially proposed to allocate six seats to the VCK, matching the number the party secured in the previous assembly elections. However, the VCK is seeking a larger share this time, requesting around 12 seats.
Negotiations on the agreement formula between the two parties are reportedly progressing, with DMK leadership considering offering approximately eight seats to the VCK.
Political analysts believe that the VCK holds significant influence in some northern districts of Tamil Nadu and among Dalit voters, making it an important ally for the DMK.
According to sources, a formal announcement regarding the seat-sharing agreement between the DMK and VCK could be made by late Saturday or Sunday. This will clarify the distribution of seats within the alliance, allowing the parties to focus entirely on their electoral preparations.
