Congress Questions Indian Governments Silence on Israeli Attacks in Lebanon

New Delhi, June 2: Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh has condemned the Israeli attacks on Lebanon, targeting the central government for its silence on the issue. He stated that the government has remained completely mute regarding Israel’s efforts to devastate Lebanon and derail the US-Iran agreement.

In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Ramesh noted, “Negotiations between the US and Iran are ongoing to prevent war in West Asia. The immediate effects of such an agreement would be the reopening of the Hormuz Strait and a decrease in oil prices, both of which are of significant interest to India.”

He further emphasized, “These discussions have yet to reach a conclusion, primarily due to Israel’s ongoing military actions in Lebanon, which have seen unprecedented incursions. Even President Trump has expressed extreme displeasure and anger towards Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, going as far as using harsh language. Many other countries around the world have also condemned Israel’s attacks on Lebanon.”

Ramesh questioned, “It is not surprising that the head of a government who has remained silent on Israel’s attempts to destroy Lebanon and disrupt the US-Iran agreement is Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Does the so-called ‘fatherland’ mean more to him than his true ‘motherland’?”

The Israeli army has launched a “large-scale operation” in southern Lebanon aimed at eliminating Hezbollah. This operation was approved by IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, following systematic preparations for artillery bombardment and other operational readiness under the Northern Command.

However, this has created obstacles in the ongoing negotiations between the US and Iran. Tasnim News Agency reported on Monday that Iran’s negotiating team has halted communication with the US through mediators due to the attacks on Lebanon.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump stated on ‘Truth Social’, “Negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran are progressing rapidly.” He added, “I had a very good conversation with Prime Minister Netanyahu, and no soldiers will go to Beirut; those already en route have been sent back. Similarly, I have had very good discussions with Hezbollah through high-ranking representatives, and they have agreed that all firing will cease, ensuring that Israel will not attack them and they will not attack Israel.”
