Bhubaneswar, February 17: The Congress Party is gearing up to confront the Odisha government during the upcoming budget session of the state assembly, starting February 17. The party plans to raise several critical issues affecting various sections of society.

Ahead of the session, a meeting of the Congress legislative party was held within the assembly premises to strategize for the upcoming discussions.

Bhakta Charan Das, the president of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC), attended the meeting. He stated in a media interaction that as a responsible opposition party, Congress is committed to bringing public issues to the assembly and holding the state government accountable for its failures.

Das further mentioned that Congress intends to challenge the government on multiple fronts, including alleged fraud and exploitation of farmers, pollution from industrial units, unresolved Mahanadi water disputes, free electricity for farmers, tax relief for consumers, women’s safety, respect, and justice, job opportunities for youth, and land rights for Dalits and Adivasis, along with job-related scams.

The OPCC president also noted that Congress legislators will highlight the government’s failure to fulfill promises made before assuming power. The meeting included Congress legislative party leader Ramchandra Kadam, Odisha Congress co-in-charge Jetty Kusum Kumar, and all party legislators.

During the budget session, opposition parties, including the Biju Janata Dal and Congress, plan to exert pressure on the government regarding various issues, particularly the chaos surrounding paddy procurement.

Opposition leader and BJD president Naveen Patnaik has also urged party legislators to raise concerns about farmers’ issues and the deteriorating law and order situation.

Additionally, to ensure the smooth conduct of the budget session, a meeting of all parties was held on Monday under the chairmanship of Assembly Speaker Surma Pandey. The session will commence with the Governor’s address, followed by a two-day discussion.

Chief Minister and Finance Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will present the state budget on February 20. According to official sources, the sixth session of the 17th Odisha Assembly is scheduled to conclude on April 8. The session will be conducted in two phases and will include 28 working days.
