New Delhi, April 1: In the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, the issue of social justice at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was raised by Congress MP Digvijaya Singh. He emphasized that this is a critically important public issue.
Singh pointed out that the commitment to social justice at JNU is weakening. He stated that this matter relates to growing concerns about discrimination. Singh informed the house that JNU is ranked among the top 10 universities in the National Institutional Ranking Framework. Many Rajya Sabha members are alumni of this prestigious institution. When JNU was established, its aim was to promote national unity, social justice, democratic values, and a scientific approach to societal challenges.
He referenced a recent statement by JNU’s Vice Chancellor, who described the experiences of historically marginalized communities as a permanent victim mentality, suggesting that such realities are being fabricated. Singh argued that these statements are entirely contrary to the university’s core objectives. Such remarks raise serious questions about the institution’s sensitivity to caste discrimination, equality, and constitutional values.
According to a report from the JNU Teachers Association, there has been nearly a 25% decline in the number of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students over the past three years. Similar concerns have emerged regarding the faculty recruitment process. Selection committees were formed for 326 vacant positions, yet over 40% of candidates were deemed ‘unsuitable.’
Singh noted that most of these positions were reserved for specific categories, and the ratio of such cases is continuously increasing. He also mentioned that there has been a delay in faculty promotions, with 89 promotion cases currently pending, 62 of which have been overdue. Such delays not only impact the career development of teachers but also negatively affect their capacity to guide PhD students.
He urged the government to ensure strict adherence to reservation rules and to uphold the constitutional commitment to inclusivity and social justice across all central universities.
