Mumbai, May 19: Senior Congress leader Hussain Dalwai has criticized the West Bengal government’s decision to eliminate allowances for imams. The government claims that the funds will be redirected to the education sector.
Dalwai stated in an interview that while he supports the use of these funds for education, it is crucial to ensure that the money is indeed used for this purpose without any negligence.
He emphasized that he has closely observed the economic conditions of imams, who typically come from challenging backgrounds. He noted that the Muslim community must take responsibility for electing governments that undermine their interests.
Dalwai firmly stated that the West Bengal government’s decision is incorrect and should not be accepted. He clarified that no imam is wealthy; most come from impoverished backgrounds. The cessation of the allowances has put many families at risk of hunger.
He added that if the government intends to use the funds for education, they should proceed, but warned that this decision will likely lead to a decrease in the number of imams.
Dalwai also responded to the central government’s claim of having eradicated Naxalism, expressing skepticism about this assertion. He condemned Naxalism, stating that while the ideology may not be entirely wrong, the violence associated with it is unacceptable. He pointed out that violence is escalating because the government is not allowing people to voice their concerns.
Additionally, he addressed a statement by Suvendu Adhikari regarding the end of stone-pelting incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that he personally disapproves of such actions.
Dalwai commented on Tamil Nadu’s bilingual policy, arguing that imposing language policies on any state is inappropriate. He stated that individuals cannot be forced to learn a language against their will, questioning the necessity of mandating Hindi education. He noted that during Congress’s governance, efforts were made to unify states.
Furthermore, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala mentioned that the Assam police’s crime branch has summoned him regarding a passport controversy. Dalwai responded that if there are allegations, they should be made clear, emphasizing that everyone has the right to speak.
