Congress Criticizes Punjab Government Over Sikhya Kranti Claims

Chandigarh, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : Opposition leader Pratap Singh Bajwa launched a scathing critique of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab on Sunday, questioning its much-touted ‘Sikhya Kranti’ initiative. He pointed out that a member of the Punjab Assembly has publicly exposed serious flaws in the education system.

Bajwa stated that the claims made by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann regarding transforming government schools starkly contrast with the issues raised by MLA Sukveer Singh Maiserkhana. Maiserkhana has voiced concerns about a shortage of teachers and the operational shortcomings of government schools in his constituency.

In a statement, Bajwa emphasized that while Mann continues to repeat the slogan of ‘Sikhya Kranti,’ it is becoming increasingly difficult to conceal the realities of Punjab’s government schools. He remarked that when a sitting AAP MLA publicly admits that his own children study in a government school and expresses worry about the lack of teachers affecting students, it highlights the growing gap between AAP’s promotional claims and the ground realities.

Maiserkhana has publicly stated that he has raised these concerns about inadequate teaching staff with senior AAP leaders and the government, only to feel that his worries have been ignored.

Bajwa questioned the fundamental validity of AAP’s ‘Sikhya Kranti’ claims. He argued that if an elected representative feels compelled to publicly address basic issues like the shortage of teachers in classrooms, it raises serious questions about the government’s so-called educational revolution. He asserted that education cannot be transformed merely through slogans, branding, and publicity; it requires qualified teachers in classrooms, well-functioning schools, and accountability to parents and students.

Additionally, Bajwa criticized the actions taken against Maiserkhana following his public criticisms. The AAP’s Punjab unit suspended the MLA from primary membership, citing ‘anti-party activities and indiscipline’ after his remarks.

He concluded by stating that instead of addressing the message, the AAP leadership chose to act against the messenger. The issue of teacher shortages is a governance problem, not merely a matter of party discipline. If an elected representative expresses concern for the education of children in his constituency, the government should listen, investigate, and resolve the issue rather than silence dissent.
