TMC Legislator Baron Biswas Transferred to Delhi for Advanced Burn Treatment

Kolkata, October 5 (Daily Kiran) : Baron Biswas, the sitting legislator from the Sagardighi assembly constituency in West Bengal, has been transferred to Delhi for advanced medical care following a severe burn incident. The 56-year-old politician sustained injuries after a devastating fire broke out at his residence in Dhuliyan, Murshidabad district.

Biswas, who has served two terms as a legislator, was initially admitted to a local nursing home in Dhuliyan. His wife also suffered injuries in the incident but was discharged after receiving preliminary treatment. Due to the absence of a burn unit at the nursing home, Biswas was transported to Kolkata in an ICU ambulance on Sunday morning for further treatment.

On Monday, it was confirmed that he had been airlifted to Delhi in the evening. His brother, Milton Biswas, stated that the legislator’s condition is stable, although concerns have arisen due to his diabetes, which complicates his burn injuries. “We are ensuring he receives the best possible care without taking any risks,” Milton added.

Speculation surrounding the circumstances of the fire has been widespread. However, Milton dismissed rumors, clarifying that Baron’s blood sugar levels had dropped before the incident occurred.

Baron Biswas is currently associated with a rebel faction of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Ritabrata Banerjee, which has been controversially rebranded as the Democratic Trinamool Congress amid ongoing disputes over party identity. He first won the Sagardighi seat in a 2023 by-election, running as a Congress candidate with support from the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Following his victory, he joined the TMC in the presence of the party’s then-general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee. Despite this change, he remained officially listed as a Congress legislator until the end of his term in 2026. In the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections, he was nominated by the TMC and secured a significant victory over BJP candidate Tapas Kumar Chakraborty by a margin of 34,260 votes, receiving a total of 90,781 votes compared to Chakraborty’s 56,521.
