Hugli, April 8: Senior Congress leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir has asserted that the party expects to increase both its vote percentage and the number of seats in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections.
In a conversation in Hugli, Mir stated that Congress is contesting all 294 seats independently and is confident that this time, not only will the vote share rise, but the number of seats will also increase.
He noted that in the last election, the party received merely 4% of the votes and did not secure any seats. However, the feedback from the public indicates a clear expectation of an improved vote percentage and more seats this time around.
Mir emphasized the growing popularity of Rahul Gandhi, highlighting how he has effectively raised issues concerning the people, which resonates well with the citizens of Bengal. He stated, “He stands as the voice of the poor before the government. No matter how hard the government tries, Rahul Gandhi will continue to amplify the voices of the underprivileged.”
He mentioned that over the past year, there has been a message from Bengal indicating that if Congress chooses to contest alone, the party will not be let down. After facing disappointment in the previous elections with no seats, Mir expressed optimism that both the vote percentage and seat count will rise this time.
Regarding the visits of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi to Bengal, he confirmed that they will come, as all major leaders have been invited to the state.
On the party’s manifesto, he noted that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has released it, emphasizing the party’s commitment to instill hope in Bengal. Mir stated, “We are serious about this, which is why our most senior and experienced leader Kharge personally announced the manifesto.”
He expressed confidence that after the election results, Congress will play a significant role in West Bengal’s political landscape.
Addressing the issue of the SIR, he reiterated that their struggle would continue, as millions remain affected. “Every citizen has the right to vote, and no one can take that away,” he concluded.
