Political Controversy Erupts in Kerala Over Chief Ministers Travel Arrangements

Thiruvananthapuram, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : A political storm is brewing in Kerala as Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan faces criticism for his travel arrangements and the use of luxury vehicles. CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam has accused Satheesan of being a puppet of wealthy interests, raising concerns about transparency in the government.

The controversy escalated when Satheesan defended his use of a chartered plane for a trip to rain-affected Malappuram. He argued that accepting such assistance is justified if it helps him reach disaster-stricken areas quickly. “I have used it, and I will continue to do so,” he stated, referencing the tragic landslide in Malappuram that claimed six lives.

On the issue of ministers traveling abroad on tickets provided by expatriate organizations, Satheesan explained that he encourages ministers to observe development opportunities in other countries for Kerala’s benefit. He noted that nearly 1,000 organizations representing Keralites exist in the UAE, which have been inviting ministers for visits since the UDF government’s return to power.

However, Viswam challenged the ethics of accepting such benefits, claiming that Satheesan’s administration is beholden to unidentified wealthy individuals. He criticized the use of luxury cars provided by friends instead of official government vehicles, questioning whether ministers are adhering to legal protocols when traveling abroad.

Viswam also mocked the government’s rationale of saving money by accepting private travel arrangements, labeling it as a hallmark of the UDF’s identity. Meanwhile, Satheesan defended Local Self-Government Minister K.M. Shaji’s use of a friend’s Range Rover, explaining that the minister’s official vehicle is outdated and frequently malfunctions.

The debate has now expanded beyond just travel arrangements to encompass broader questions about the boundaries between personal benefits and public responsibilities. Viswam has also sought responses from Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and K.C. Venugopal regarding the government’s practices.
