Shillong, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma addressed concerns regarding the recent shift of eight legislators from the United Democratic Party (UDP) to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He emphasized that this change would not affect the functioning of the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.
The eight UDP lawmakers officially joined the BJP in New Delhi, increasing the BJP’s representation in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly from two to ten. Sangma remarked that the decision was a personal choice of the legislators and involved two political parties, asserting that it had no direct implications for the NPP.
“This is a matter between two political parties and a decision made by the respective legislators. It does not concern the NPP,” he stated during a press conference. Sangma clarified that both the UDP and BJP are part of the ruling coalition, and the movement of lawmakers from one ally to another does not alter the coalition’s overall strength.
He reiterated that the coalition’s numbers remain unchanged, as the shift occurred within the alliance. “Therefore, this will not impact the functioning of our government,” he added. Despite acknowledging potential concerns between the UDP and BJP due to this shift, Sangma maintained that the government still holds a simple majority in the Assembly and will continue its operations normally.
When questioned about possible cabinet reshuffles following the BJP’s increased strength, Sangma dismissed any immediate changes. “I have already made it clear that there will be no impact on anything,” he said. He also confirmed that the BJP had not requested additional ministerial positions.
Regarding the BJP’s growing influence, Sangma noted that there is currently no threat to his leadership. He emphasized that in a democracy, every political party naturally seeks to expand its organization and support base. The NPP, he assured, will continue to strengthen its own support while maintaining its distinct political identity.
Sangma concluded by stating, “We must work to ensure that our support base remains strong.”
