Chandigarh, May 17: The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Punjab is set to commence on June 25, as announced by the Election Commission. Malwinder Singh Kang, a leader of the Aam Aadmi Party and MP from Sri Anandpur Sahib, has raised questions regarding this initiative.
In a post on the social media platform X, Kang urged the people of Punjab to be vigilant. He questioned the urgency of implementing the SIR just before the 2027 elections. He highlighted that in Bihar, over 6.5 million legitimate names were removed from the voter list, and in West Bengal, a staggering 9.1 million names were cut, amounting to nearly 12 percent of the total voter list. He suggested that the BJP benefited from these actions.
Kang further criticized the timing of the voting phases, noting that if Punjab and Uttar Pradesh are set to vote around the same time, why is Uttar Pradesh scheduled for the first phase while Punjab is relegated to the third phase, which has stricter deadlines?
He expressed concern that some states are given more time while Punjab is not. This “selective pressure” suggests potential manipulation. He called upon all political parties, tagging the Aam Aadmi Party, Punjab Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal, and Bahujan Samaj Party, to set aside their differences for the sake of Punjab. He urged them to ensure that polling agents are present at every booth and to keep a close watch on every Booth Level Officer (BLO) to prevent any legitimate Punjabi voter from being removed from the list.
Kang emphasized the importance of safeguarding the voices of farmers, youth, and families in Punjab, stating that they deserve representation. “We will fight for this. Long live Punjab!” he declared.
Chief Electoral Officer Anindita Mitra stated on May 14 that the SIR in Punjab will be conducted transparently. The CEO’s office has completed all preparations for the SIR process in the state. Mitra also reminded voters that maintaining dual votes is a crime under the Indian Constitution, punishable by up to one year in prison, and urged all voters to cooperate fully with the BLOs during this process.
