Guwahati, April 20: The Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading misinformation regarding the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill and delaying its implementation.
During a press conference in Guwahati, Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress President Meera Boruah stated that the BJP is attempting to portray opposition parties as anti-women while the central government has failed to implement the law passed in 2023.
She questioned why the government has linked the implementation of this bill to delimitation and the 2011 census, arguing that such conditions are unnecessary and are only causing delays in granting 33 percent reservation for women.
Meera Boruah criticized the BJP, claiming that the party creates problems and then pretends to solve them. She noted that the public is beginning to understand this type of politics.
She emphasized that Congress has always supported women’s empowerment and advocates for the immediate implementation of women’s reservation without any conditions. Boruah also asserted that Congress provides more tickets to women candidates in elections compared to the BJP.
The women’s Congress leader raised concerns about women’s safety and rights under the BJP government, highlighting the disparity between the government’s claims and the reality on the ground.
She stated that Congress believes women’s reservation should be implemented based on the current Lok Sabha situation, without waiting for future delimitation.
Meera Boruah urged the public to be cautious of political propaganda and not to be misled. She reaffirmed that Congress will continue to fight for women’s rights and demand the long-pending implementation of this reservation.
