Congress Reaffirms Support for Womens Reservation: Hussain Dalwai

Mumbai, April 20: Senior Congress leader Hussain Dalwai from Maharashtra has asserted that the Congress party has consistently advocated for women’s empowerment and supports reservation for women. He responded to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s recent remarks, claiming that the BJP is against women’s reservation.

On Monday, CM Fadnavis criticized the opposition for the failure to pass the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill in Parliament. He accused them of hindering a historic opportunity for women due to their outdated mindset.

In an interview, Dalwai countered Fadnavis’s statements, emphasizing that the Congress party is fully in favor of providing reservation to women, with no opposition to this stance. He stated that women should receive 33 percent reservation in both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Providing reservation for women has been a longstanding commitment of Congress, which has already implemented it in panchayats, district councils, municipalities, and corporations.

Mocking the RSS workshops, Dalwai claimed that they teach violence, deceit, and how to mislead people from a young age. He reiterated that Congress has always delivered justice to women.

Dalwai referenced the freedom movement, highlighting the significant role women played alongside Mahatma Gandhi. Many women faced imprisonment, beatings, and even gunfire during the struggle for independence.

He accused certain individuals of collaborating with the British during the freedom struggle, while asserting that Congress has always honored women.

The Congress leader leveled serious allegations against the BJP, questioning the lack of action in cases involving Kuldeep Sengar and Brijbhushan Sharan Singh. He stated that the people of India are well aware of how much the BJP truly supports women.

Dalwai pointed to the Bilkis Bano case and the atrocities against women in Manipur, noting that while such violence continues, there has been little to no action taken.

He challenged CM Fadnavis on why women are not given 33 percent of tickets in the ongoing elections. Dalwai questioned why there are not 33 percent women in the Chief Minister’s cabinet and why women were not adequately represented during ticket distribution. He argued that if 33 percent reservation for women is to be discussed, it should also be implemented within political parties and their organizations.

Regarding statements made by Baba Bagheswar, Dalwai suggested that their true intent is to engage in politics under the guise of religion.

He also commented on Owaisi’s remarks, stating that Muslims were not responsible for the partition; rather, it was Jinnah’s politics that ultimately harmed Muslims after the creation of Pakistan.

In response to protests over the failure to pass the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill in BJP-ruled states, Dalwai stated that Congress respects women and has never opposed reservation. He suggested that for the BJP, delimitation has taken precedence over women’s reservation, leading to their frustration. He remarked that they have not faced such a strong response since 2014.
