Supriya Srinet Criticizes Yogi Adityanath Over Womens Reservation Bill Opposition

Bengaluru, April 20: In light of recent reports about the Uttar Pradesh government calling a special assembly session to bring a censure motion against the opposition, Congress spokesperson Supriya Srinet launched a sharp attack on the Yogi government. She stated that Chief Minister Yogi should first apologize to women.

In an interview, Srinet pointed out that Yogi Adityanath had opposed the Women’s Reservation Bill back in 2009. She emphasized that the Chief Minister should humbly seek forgiveness from half the population, the women. She also insisted that a special session should indeed be convened in Uttar Pradesh.

Srinet highlighted various incidents, including those in Hathras and Lakhimpur, as well as events at IIT BHU, to illustrate the insecurity faced by women in the state. She criticized the BJP for standing by those accused of crimes against women, including the case involving respected athletes linked to BJP leader Brijbhushan Sharan Singh. She called for discussions during the special session on how the government has turned a blind eye to these issues.

She remarked that the bill that did not pass in the assembly was a forced and undemocratic delimitation bill. She expressed no doubt that if the bill were to be reintroduced, it would also fail to pass.

Responding to Union Minister Kiren Rijiju’s statement, she noted that the Lok Sabha has 543 seats, and the entire opposition is ready to implement one-third reservation for women. She questioned why the government is not bringing forth the bill that allocates one-third of the 543 seats to women, instead proposing reservation for only 850 seats. According to her, the biggest obstacle to women’s reservation is Prime Minister Modi himself.

Criticizing the state’s double-engine government, she pointed out the discrepancies in their governance. She stated that wherever their government exists, it is running in opposite directions. The reality is that when the BJP talks about women’s issues, its performance is lacking. Only 12.9% of its MPs are women, which is below the Lok Sabha average, and about 9.9% of its MLAs are women, lower than the national average. The BJP needs to first rectify its own house.
