Kolkata, August 15: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari urged political parties on Saturday to set aside their differences and unite for the comprehensive development of the state.
CM Adhikari was addressing the 80th Independence Day celebrations organized by the state government at Red Road in central Kolkata. He emphasized Bengal’s historical legacy in the national freedom struggle and reiterated his commitment to fulfilling the aspirations of the people.
“Bengal is the land of nationalism. It is the birthplace of freedom fighters like Rishi Aurobindo, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Khudiram Bose, Matangini Hazra, and Bina Das, whose contributions to the Indian freedom movement are unforgettable. Let us all come together, leaving behind political narrowness, to unite for the development of Bengal. I will always honor the pledge I took on May 9, 2026, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Brigade Ground. That pledge will never be dishonored,” he stated.
The Chief Minister reiterated Prime Minister Modi‘s commitment to achieving the goal of a ‘Developed India‘ through the path of a ‘Developed Bengal.’
He said, “The dream of a ‘Developed India’ in 2047 will only be realized if we create a ‘Developed Bengal.’ Our aim is to restore the lost glory of West Bengal. It was established on June 20, 1947, by Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee and Pranavananda Maharaj, prioritizing its merger with India. I want to spread the development of West Bengal from the Sundarbans in the south to the hills in the north. My focus is on job creation, women’s empowerment, and the security of the state.”
Simultaneously, a parallel ceremony was held at the North Bengal Mini Secretariat, Uttarkanya, in North Bengal.
North Bengal Development Minister Nishith Pramanik hoisted the national flag at the event. This marked a break from a 12-year tradition where administrative officials led the ceremony. Pramanik told reporters, “Although it has been almost 12 years since Uttarkanya was established, no minister had hoisted the flag here before. The infrastructure was ready, but the previous government did not grant the rights to the people of North Bengal. Previously, bureaucrats hoisted the flag. But like many other things, this time there has been a change. For the first time, a minister has hoisted the national flag at Uttarkanya.”
