Mumbai, April 15: In Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, tensions escalated over the installation of a statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, leading to two FIRs being filed and 19 arrests, officials reported on Wednesday.
The conflict arose on Tuesday evening when a statue of Baba Saheb Ambedkar was allegedly damaged, resulting in clashes between local residents and police. This incident occurred in the Banke Ganj area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Mailani police station, during the Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Amit Kumar Rai stated that two FIRs have been registered. One was filed by a woman who claimed she was assaulted, while the other was lodged by the Mailani Station House Officer against anti-social elements. So far, 19 individuals have been identified and arrested.
ASP Rai mentioned that the identification process for others involved is ongoing, utilizing social media videos and CCTV footage. He explained that the dispute was related to land. Residents had planned to install a photo of Baba Saheb and preside over an event, while the village head attempted to place a smaller statue of Ambedkar, which led to objections and subsequent clashes.
According to the ASP, police were informed of the situation, and upon their arrival, some individuals began throwing stones at the officers. In response, the police had to use force to restore order.
Local residents reported that an unidentified individual allegedly damaged the statue, igniting anger among the community.
Authorities indicated that a tense calm currently prevails in the area, with senior officials continuously monitoring the situation. A heavy police presence has been deployed to maintain law and order and prevent any further escalation.
