Beijing, June 6: On the occasion of World Environment Day, China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment released the “2025 China Ecological Environment Bulletin” on Friday. The bulletin indicates a continuous improvement in the country’s ecological quality by 2025.

According to the report, the average PM2.5 level in 339 cities across China was recorded at 29.3 micrograms per cubic meter in 2025. This figure is expected to drop to 28 micrograms per cubic meter by 2026. During the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), the number of heavily polluted days decreased by nearly a quarter.

Additionally, the proportion of surface water classified as excellent quality (Grade I-III) reached 91.4% last year, maintaining above 90% for the second consecutive year. The water levels in the main streams of both the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers remained stable at Grade II.

The bulletin also reported that approximately 85% of China’s coastal waters were of excellent quality in 2025. The soil quality of agricultural land remained stable, with the safe utilization rate of contaminated farmland reaching 93%. In rural areas, the domestic sewage treatment rate was recorded at 55%.

Moreover, the country’s forest coverage stood at 25.09%, while grassland coverage exceeded 56%. The soil conservation rate across the nation was noted at 73.09%, which is an improvement compared to 2024.
