
New Delhi, June 2: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Suryakant will administer the oath to five new judges of the Supreme Court today. The central government has approved their appointments.
According to a circular issued by the Supreme Court registry, the oath-taking ceremony for Justice Shil Nagu, Justice Shri Chandrashekar, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Justice Arun Palli, and senior advocate V. Mohana will take place at 10:30 AM in the auditorium located on the third floor of the Supreme Court’s Administrative Building Complex (ABC).
The registry has made special arrangements for the ceremony and has informed officials, staff, and relevant coordinating agencies, including the Supreme Court security branch and CPWD. Due to the event, parking will not be allowed in the Administrative Building Complex on the day of the ceremony. Only vehicles of registrars will be permitted entry.
Acting on the recommendations of the Supreme Court Collegium, the central government has approved the appointment of the Chief Justices from four High Courts and senior advocate V. Mohana as judges of the Supreme Court. On Monday, Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced on social media platform X that the President, after consulting with the Chief Justice of India, has appointed Justice Shil Nagu, Justice Shri Chandrashekar, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Justice Arun Palli, and senior advocate V. Mohana as judges of the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the promotions of Justice Shil Nagu, Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Shri Chandrashekar, Chief Justice of Bombay High Court, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court, Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, and senior advocate V. Mohana during its meetings on May 22 and May 27.
Justice Shil Nagu was appointed as a judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in May 2011 and took charge as Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court in July 2024.
Justice Shri Chandrashekar became a judge of the Jharkhand High Court in January 2013 and assumed the role of Chief Justice of Bombay High Court in January 2025.
Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in April 2013, became a permanent judge in March 2015, and took charge as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court in July 2025.
Justice Arun Palli was appointed as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in December 2013 and became Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court in April 2025.
Senior advocate V. Mohana has a long-standing practice in the Supreme Court, representing various cases related to constitutional, civil, and service laws.
According to the current Memorandum of Procedure (MoP), the collegium, which consists of the Chief Justice of India and the four senior-most judges of the Supreme Court, sends its recommendations to the central government to fill the vacancies in the Supreme Court.
With these five appointments, the judicial strength of the Supreme Court will be further enhanced, bringing the total number of judges in the Supreme Court to 37.
