Ujjain, September 1: The Mahakaleshwar Temple witnessed a grand Bhasma Aarti on the fourth day of the Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada, attracting a large number of devotees. The ceremony took place early Tuesday morning, following the customary rituals.
Devotees gathered in the temple complex to witness this divine spectacle. After receiving blessings from Lord Veerabhadra, the temple doors were opened with the sound of drums and trumpets. As the devotees caught their first glimpse of Baba Mahakal, the temple echoed with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” The atmosphere was filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and sacred mantras.
With the opening of the temple gates, the ritual of Jalabhishek commenced, where Lord Mahakal was bathed with Panchamrit made from milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and fruit juices. The first bell was rung to offer Hari Om water to Baba Mahakal. Following the Kapoor Aarti, Baba adorned a crown. The Bhasma Aarti was then performed with the accompaniment of traditional instruments like jhanjhar, manjira, and drums, while Baba Mahakal was adorned with a Trinetra and decorated with the sun and moon.
The chief priest of the temple conducted the Maha Aarti, allowing numerous devotees to witness the Bhasma Aarti. Many had queued since the previous night to have a glimpse of their beloved deity. During the Bhasma Aarti, men are required to wear traditional dhoti-sola, while women must don sarees.
According to tradition, the Bhasma Aarti is offered to Baba Mahakal by the Mahanirvani Akhara. It is believed that after the offering of Bhasma, Baba Mahakal reveals his divine form to the devotees. This auspicious event draws a significant number of pilgrims to the sacred city of Ujjain.
