Patiala, September 1: A health scare erupted at a prominent school in Patiala, Punjab, when several students suddenly fell ill. Authorities suspect food poisoning as the cause. In response to the seriousness of the situation, the health department has initiated an investigation.
Punjab’s Health Minister, Dr. Balbir Singh, reported that five children have been hospitalized, while others are experiencing mild symptoms and have received preliminary treatment.
Dr. Singh stated that he has instructed relevant officials to investigate the matter and submit a report within a few hours. The actual cause of the students’ illness will be determined once the investigation report is available.
Initial information suggests that the children had gone off-campus, raising concerns that they may have eaten food from an outside location. However, it is premature to conclude that the food consumed outside is solely responsible for their illness. The health department is examining all possible angles.
He added that if the investigation confirms that the children ate at a specific outside location, that venue will also be scrutinized. The quality of food, cleanliness, and food preparation practices at that site will be thoroughly assessed.
Dr. Singh noted that the condition of the five hospitalized children is stable, and they are receiving treatment at a Manipal Group hospital. Additionally, necessary arrangements have been made at the government Rajindra Hospital for the treatment of other children. Parents have been informed about the treatment options available at the government hospital, but the choice of facility remains at their discretion.
The health minister emphasized the importance of strict hygiene standards in all places where food is prepared for children. Personal hygiene of staff, clean utensils, and a sanitary environment are crucial.
He also urged children to wash their hands thoroughly with soap before eating. Developing good hygiene habits from childhood is beneficial for lifelong health. If any negligence is found during the investigation, appropriate action will be taken against those responsible.
