New Delhi, May 6: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant emphasized that social justice should remain the cornerstone of a humane and just society. He warned on Wednesday that the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is revealing an inherent bias against the poor.
Speaking at the eighth Dayanand Smriti Lecture organized by ‘Respect India’ on the theme ‘Rashmirathi: The Epic of Social Justice,’ CJI Kant noted that the ideals of equality and human dignity were powerfully expressed in the works of Ramdhari Singh ‘Dinkar’ even before they were enshrined in the Constitution.
Drawing lessons from Dinkar’s epic ‘Rashmirathi,’ the CJI stated that equality, dignity, and social harmony are essential in a democracy. He asserted that merely enacting laws is insufficient unless every individual is treated with dignity and respect.
Expressing concern over persistent inequalities in society, he remarked that even after seven decades, the disparities highlighted in Dinkar’s works remain relevant today.
The CJI further stated that the ideals and practice of social justice form the foundation of a just social order. He cautioned that emerging technologies, including AI-based systems, could deepen social exclusion if they are not guided by constitutional values and human sensitivity.
He added that literature and constitutional ethics together provide a sustainable framework for maintaining equality and social harmony in society.
On this occasion, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari was honored with the ‘Dinkar Culture Award 2026’ for his contributions to promoting the poet’s legacy. He remarked that Dinkar’s poetry continues to inspire and reflects the strength of our cultural heritage.
The memorial lecture was attended by individuals from the judiciary, education sector, and public life.
Vikas Singh, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association and former Additional Solicitor General, highlighted that Dinkar’s writings reflect the fundamental principles of justice deeply rooted in India’s civilizational consciousness. This platform connects literary ideas with contemporary legal and social discourse.
Manish Kumar Chaudhary, founder and General Secretary of ‘Respect India,’ stated that this memorial lecture is a tribute to Dinkar’s enduring legacy and ideas, which continue to inspire generations. He expressed a desire for this platform to unite culture, ideas, and social responsibility.
