Beijing, April 24: Recent reports from the Nyalam County Immigration and Border Inspection Center in Shigatse, Tibet Autonomous Region, indicate that Changmu Port has welcomed over 1 million travelers since its full reopening in September 2023, as of April 20.
Historically, Changmu Port has served as a vital gateway for trade between China and South Asia, once being the largest land port between China and Nepal. However, the devastating earthquake in Nepal on April 25, 2015, severely damaged the port’s infrastructure, leading to a suspension of customs clearance. After a transitional period with partial restoration of goods transport, the port was fully reopened in September 2023.
Since its reopening, there has been a significant and continuous increase in passenger traffic. Data shows that from September 2023 to the end of the year, over 133,000 travelers passed through the port. In 2024, this number surged to more than 358,000. The beginning of 2025 saw an even faster increase, with over 426,000 individuals undergoing immigration inspection throughout the year. Consequently, the total number of travelers has now exceeded 1 million since the port’s full reopening.
Notably, from the disruptions caused by the earthquake to the restoration of goods transport and the complete resumption of operations, Changmu Port has achieved an average annual growth rate of approximately 20%. This growth is attributed to a combination of physical reconstruction and institutional reforms.
The head of the Nyalam Immigration and Border Inspection Center stated, “This increase in numbers is not just a statistic; it clearly indicates the growing openness of border areas.” He noted that the implementation of convenient policies, such as visa-free transit and online registration for foreign entry cards, has significantly enhanced Changmu Port’s international appeal. To date, travelers from over 80 countries and regions have passed through this port.
