Kolkata, February 25: In preparation for the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel will be deployed starting March 1. Each assigned vehicle will be equipped with GPS trackers. This initiative aims to ensure that central observers appointed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) can continuously monitor the effective utilization of CAPF personnel from day one.

The ECI has issued clear directives for the deployment of 240 CAPF companies before the announcement of election dates. These forces will be tasked with controlling the area and familiarizing themselves with the state’s geographical layout.

An insider from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office in West Bengal stated, “To ensure effective utilization from the first day, GPS trackers will be installed in the vehicles assigned to these CAPF personnel. This will allow the central observers to track their movements. Observers may also send daily reports on the use of CAPF to the commission.”

This arrangement will also apply to an additional 240 companies that will be deployed in the second phase on March 10. According to the insider, “In previous elections in West Bengal, there were numerous complaints about the ineffective use of a large number of CAPF personnel on polling days. Complaints also arose regarding the movement of CAPF personnel during duty. To address these issues, the commission has decided to strictly monitor the movements of CAPF personnel from the outset to ensure their effective use throughout the election process.”

The first phase on March 1 will include 110 companies from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), 55 from the Border Security Force (BSF), 21 from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), 27 from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and 27 from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).

The second phase will see the deployment of another 240 companies on March 10, comprising 120 from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), 65 from the BSF, 16 from the CISF, 20 from the ITBP, and 19 from the SSB. The process for withdrawing these 480 companies from any area will be announced in due course as per the election commission‘s notification.
