
New Delhi, February 26: Leela Majumdar, a luminary in Bengali literature, is celebrated for her enchanting contributions to children’s literature. Her works have left an indelible mark, captivating readers across all ages with stories that resonate deeply. Born on February 26, 1908, in Kolkata to a distinguished family, she was the niece of the renowned writer Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury.
Majumdar spent her early years in Shillong and completed her schooling at Loreto Convent and St. John’s Diocesan School, where she excelled academically. She earned gold medals in both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English Literature from Calcutta University. Her teaching career began at the Maharani Girls’ School in Darjeeling, and she later joined Santiniketan at the invitation of Rabindranath Tagore. She also worked at Ashutosh College and All India Radio, where she created the character Monimala for the series “Mahila Mahal,” beautifully portraying the life of a middle-class Bengali girl.
Her literary journey commenced in her teenage years with the story “Lakkhi Chele” published in her uncle’s magazine, “Sandesh.” Her first children’s book, “Baidyanather Bori,” was followed by “Din Dupure,” which garnered critical acclaim and established her reputation. Over her career, Majumdar authored more than 125 books, including short story collections, novels, poetry, memoirs, cookbooks, translations, and edited works.
Majumdar’s stories often presented the realities of everyday life with a light-hearted touch, infused with profound magic and sensitivity. She crafted strong female characters that highlighted the complexities of domestic life. For children, she created a world filled with dreams, while also prompting adult readers to reflect on familial relationships and societal issues.
Her most famous work, “Bak Badh Pala,” is a comedic play that earned her accolades. The novel “Padi Pishir Bormi Baksho” was once considered for a film adaptation by Satyajit Ray, later brought to life by Arundhati Devi. Additionally, she translated works of literary giants like Shakespeare, Jonathan Swift, and Ernest Hemingway into Bengali.
