New Delhi, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : National Engineers Day is celebrated every year on September 15, coinciding with the birth anniversary of the renowned engineer Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. His contributions to engineering remain a benchmark, influencing the field profoundly. Visvesvaraya’s vision extended beyond mere infrastructure; he envisioned a comprehensive picture of national development.

Engineering is not limited to constructing machines, bridges, or buildings. True engineers analyze problems and devise long-lasting solutions that benefit society. As India rapidly advances in technology, infrastructure, and digital systems, the role of engineers is becoming increasingly vital.

Visvesvaraya made significant strides in flood control, water management, and irrigation. After a devastating flood in Hyderabad in 1908, he contributed to solutions for flood management. His focus on planning reservoirs and dams was pivotal. As the chief engineer in Mysore, he played a crucial role in constructing the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam, which transformed irrigation and agriculture in the region.

His influence extended beyond engineering. He advocated for industrialization, education, and better governance as essential for the country’s progress. His writings reflect his vision for India’s economic and industrial advancement. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in 1955.

Today, as India embraces technology, engineers face greater responsibilities. Major projects such as highways, expressways, metros, railways, bridges, ports, and smart cities are underway. Engineers are essential in planning and executing these initiatives.

The scope of engineering has expanded beyond bricks, cement, and machines. Indian engineers are making strides in artificial intelligence, robotics, cybersecurity, semiconductors, drones, and quantum technology. They are also pivotal in developing new technologies in strategic fields like space and defense.

Digital India exemplifies this progress. Services like Aadhaar, UPI, and digital lockers have simplified daily tasks for millions. The success of these initiatives relies heavily on software engineering, data management, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure, showcasing the hard work of engineers.

Moreover, the country is rapidly advancing towards green technology. Engineers are innovating in solar energy, wind energy, green hydrogen, energy storage, and electric vehicles. Initiatives like PM Surya Ghar, PM-KUSUM, and the National Green Hydrogen Mission highlight the critical role of technical experts in these fields. The demand for clean energy and sustainable development will only grow in the future.

The government is also promoting engineering education, research, and innovation through various initiatives. Institutions like IITs, NITs, and IIITs are training the next generation of engineers. Programs such as Atal Innovation Mission, Startup India, and Skill India provide opportunities for youth to develop new technologies and start their ventures.

India is striving to strengthen its position in deep tech. Research in artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, robotics, and cybersecurity is being encouraged, directly benefiting engineering students and young researchers.

As India aims for the goal of ‘Developed India 2047’, engineers are not just professionals completing development projects; they are problem solvers addressing the future needs of the country. From better roads and smart cities to digital payments, space missions, clean energy, and modern defense technologies, engineering leaves its mark across all sectors.

Thus, National Engineers Day is not merely a celebration of a great engineer’s birthday. It is an opportunity to recognize the contributions of millions of engineers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to lay a strong foundation for the nation’s development.
