Mumbai, August 10: Some films in Hindi cinema remain etched in the hearts of audiences long after their release. One such film is Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Chak De! India’. This movie, which showcases the struggles and triumphs of the women’s hockey team, delivered powerful messages about teamwork, hard work, and fighting for one’s goals. Now, it marks 19 years since its release.
On Monday, ‘Chak De! India’ celebrated its 19th anniversary. Actress Sagarika Ghatge, who portrayed Preeti Sabharwal in the film, took to her Instagram to commemorate the occasion. She shared a poster featuring Shah Rukh Khan and other cast members, captioned, “Celebrating 19 years of Chak De! India.”
Through this post, Sagarika revisited her cherished memories associated with the film. This movie holds special significance for her, as it marked her debut in Bollywood. Her portrayal of Preeti Sabharwal, a member of the Indian women’s hockey team, earned her considerable recognition among audiences. Following the film’s release, her performance and character garnered much discussion.
Released in 2007, ‘Chak De! India’ was directed by Shimit Amin, with the story and screenplay written by Jaideep Sahni. Shah Rukh Khan played the role of Kabir Khan, a former captain of the Indian men’s hockey team whose career takes a hit after a loss to Pakistan.
Following this defeat, Kabir faces accusations of betraying his country and remains away from the sport for several years. However, he eventually gets a chance to redeem himself by coaching the Indian women’s hockey team. The team consists of 16 players from diverse backgrounds, families, and mindsets. Initially, there is a lack of cohesion among the players, and several differences emerge within the team.
Kabir’s greatest challenge is to transform these individuals into a strong team. He teaches them to prioritize teamwork over personal identities. Gradually, the players set aside their differences and unite towards a common goal, embarking on a journey to lead the Indian women’s hockey team to victory. The film poignantly depicts this struggle and transformation.
In addition to Shah Rukh Khan and Sagarika Ghatge, the film features notable performances by Vidya Malavade, Shilpa Shukla, Chitrashi Rawat, Tanya Abrol, and many others.
