Kolkata, April 29: A touching moment emerged during the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026. The Election Commission of India (ECI) shared the inspiring story of a female voter who, despite battling cancer, made it to the polls to exercise her democratic right.
The ECI posted on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “Unwavering courage! A voter, despite fighting cancer, cast her vote at polling station number 202 in the Rashbehari Assembly constituency of South Kolkata.” This post aimed to highlight the commitment of voters to participate in democracy, even under challenging circumstances.
Previously, the commission shared glimpses of the robust voting taking place in the state, particularly noting the increasing participation of women and youth.
In one post, the ECI remarked on the festive spirit of democracy, noting long queues of female voters early in the morning.
Another message encouraged citizens, saying, “Election enthusiasm! Morning queues of eager voters in the second phase, step out and vote.” This was a call for greater voter turnout.
The ECI also focused on young voters, sharing a post that read, “That smile says it all. A young voter’s joy after casting their vote in the Bhowanipore Assembly constituency. Your vote is your voice; don’t miss this opportunity.”
These posts clearly indicate that the Election Commission is making continuous efforts to ensure maximum voter participation in this crucial phase, with special attention to women and youth.
Additionally, the ECI announced a ban on exit polls via a post on ‘X’. This ban is effective from April 9 at 7:00 AM until April 29 at 6:30 PM, prohibiting any broadcasting or publication of exit polls during this period.
Voting commenced at 7 AM on Wednesday across 142 seats in six districts of West Bengal, including the state capital, Kolkata. The voting process is proceeding peacefully under strict security measures, with officials closely monitoring the situation.
