Chennai, June 21: Political tensions have escalated following comments made by CPI(M) leader P. Shanmuugam regarding a potential merger between DMK and AIADMK. His remarks during an interview have drawn sharp criticism from DMK leaders.
Shanmuugam defended the alliances formed by CPI(M) with DMK and AIADMK over the past few years. He stated that such decisions were made due to the political circumstances at the time, rather than compromising ideology.
He emphasized, “Electoral alliances are based on political realities. Both parties benefit from seat-sharing, and there is no place for the term ‘betrayal’ in such political decisions.”
Referencing previous elections, he argued that DMK has also relied on smaller parties like DMDK at crucial junctures, as it lacked the strength to win independently.
According to Shanmuugam, the political changes in Tamil Nadu and the expectations of the public have influenced the current political stance of the Marxist party. He criticized DMK leadership for allowing attacks on parties that leave their alliance. He remarked, “Targeting those who exit the alliance is a wrong habit. DMK leadership should prevent those who speak emotionally and with hostility.”
Shanmuugam argued that both Dravidian parties have gradually drifted away from many of their core principles. He noted, “In today’s political environment, it wouldn’t be surprising if DMK and AIADMK eventually operate as a single party.”
These comments come amid ongoing political discussions following the recent assembly elections, during which there were reports of preliminary talks about a potential government formation between DMK and AIADMK.
However, DMK leaders have vehemently condemned Shanmuugam’s statements and dismissed any suggestions of a merger between the two Dravidian rivals in the future.
