Mumbai, February 24: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to visit India this week. During his trip, he will meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss strengthening India-Canada relations. Carney will arrive in New Delhi after a stop in Mumbai. Following his visit to India, he will travel to Australia and Japan. His tour of India, Australia, and Japan is scheduled from February 26 to March 7.
According to a statement released by the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office, both leaders will focus on enhancing Canada-India relations, which include ambitious new partnerships in trade, energy, technology, artificial intelligence (AI), talent, culture, and defense. Carney will also meet with business leaders to identify investment opportunities in Canada and foster new partnerships between businesses in both countries.
Carney’s office stated, “Through these visits to Canada’s three strongest Indo-Pacific partner nations, the Prime Minister will deepen regional ties that are crucial for our security and prosperity.”
The statement further noted, “In an uncertain world, Canada is focusing on what we can control. We are diversifying our trade and making significant investments to create new opportunities for our workers and businesses. We are forging new partnerships abroad to create greater certainty, security, and prosperity at home.”
The Canadian government also highlighted that India is the fastest-growing major economy globally and a hub for global commerce and technology. In 2024, India was Canada’s seventh-largest trading partner in goods and services, with bilateral trade reaching $30.8 billion.
Prime Minister Modi met with Carney during the G20 summit in Johannesburg last November, where they set a target of $50 billion in bilateral trade by 2030. Modi emphasized the potential for strengthening trade and investment linkages between India and Canada.
He posted on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “We have set a target of $50 billion for our bilateral trade by 2030. Canadian pension funds are also showing deep interest in Indian companies.”
Earlier this month, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand met with Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar during the Munich Security Conference in Germany.
The Canadian government announced in an official press release, “This marks the fifth meeting between ministers since September 2025, reflecting the growing momentum in Canada-India relations, which are built on over 75 years of diplomatic ties and strong people-to-people connections. The ministers discussed deepening cooperation in various sectors, including energy, technology, and trade.”
