Vancouver, June 19: Canada, co-host of the FIFA World Cup 2026, achieved a historic victory in front of its home fans. At BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada delivered an outstanding performance, decisively defeating Qatar 6-0. This marks Canada’s first-ever win in FIFA World Cup history.
The star of the match was Jonathan David, who scored three goals. From the outset, Canada displayed aggressive play. In the 16th minute, Cyle Larin opened the scoring, giving Canada a 1-0 lead. Just 13 minutes later, Jonathan David doubled the advantage with a spectacular goal. Canada maintained pressure on Qatar throughout the first half, and in the dying moments, David netted a third goal, pushing Qatar onto the back foot.
The second half started poorly for Canada as midfielder Ismael Kon suffered a serious injury due to a tackle from Qatar’s Asim Madibo. Kon was carried off the field on a stretcher. Following a video review, Madibo’s yellow card was upgraded to a red card, forcing him to leave the match. This left Qatar at a disadvantage, which Canada capitalized on. Nathan Saliba, who replaced Kon, scored a stunning goal in the 64th minute, extending Canada’s lead to 4-0.
Shortly after, substitute Jacob Shaffelburg’s shot was accidentally deflected into Qatar’s own net by defender Mohammed Manai, bringing the score to 5-0. In stoppage time, Jonathan David completed his hat trick, scoring the sixth goal for Canada.
Despite their efforts, Qatar failed to penetrate Canada’s defense throughout the match. With this victory, Canada now has four points and is rapidly advancing towards the knockout stage. To secure the top position in Group B, Canada only needs a draw in their next match against Switzerland.
