Sunil Chaurasia Secures Hat-Trick Title at DP World PGTI Nexgen in Varanasi

Varanasi, June 18: Sunil Chaurasia, a 31-year-old golfer from Kolkata, clinched his third consecutive title at the DP World PGTI Nexgen tournament held in Varanasi on Thursday. He finished the final round with a score of three-over 73, securing the championship with a four-shot lead and a total prize of ₹25 lakh.

Chaurasia concluded the week at the BLW Greens Golf Course with an impressive six-under 204 (67-64-73). This victory ties him with Mani Ram’s record for three wins in a single Nexgen season, a feat achieved in 2010.

This win follows Chaurasia’s earlier successes at the Alpha Sports Academy Golf Championship in Patna and the Vijay Kumar Memorial in Lucknow, making him the first player in Nexgen Tour history to win three consecutive events.

Starting the final round in a shotgun format, Chaurasia faced tough competition throughout the day. He encountered challenges early on, including a double bogey on the sixth hole (par-3) and another shot lost on the ninth hole (par-5). However, the Kolkata golfer displayed composure under pressure, finishing his second nine holes with two birdies and two bogeys, ultimately securing the title despite not achieving his best score.

Joint runners-up Mukim Ali and Souvik Nayak improved their leaderboard positions with scores of 70 and 73, respectively, but could not surpass Chaurasia, who led throughout the tournament.

Local favorite Hemant Yadav, an employee of the Banaras Locomotive Works, finished tied for fourth after a final round score of 77. He ended with an even-par total of 210, alongside Gurugram’s Nikhil Sharma (68-74-68) and Delhi’s Pawan Kumar (76-70-64).

Pawan Kumar delivered an outstanding performance on the final day, matching the course record with a six-under 64, a record previously set by Chaurasia and equaled by Yadav.

Chaurasia’s victory earned him ₹3,17,875, bringing his total earnings for the season to ₹10,04,393, making him the 2026 DP World PGTI Nexgen Order of Merit champion. This achievement secures his place in the DP World PGTI (Main Tour) for the 2027 season.
