Bumrah Shines as India Clinches T20 World Cup Title at Home Ground

Ahmedabad, March 8: India secured a remarkable victory against New Zealand, winning the T20 World Cup 2026 final by 96 runs. The match took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium, where Jasprit Bumrah excelled, taking four wickets for just 15 runs, earning him the title of ‘Player of the Match’.

Following India’s historic win, Bumrah expressed his joy, stating, “This victory is incredibly special for me. I had previously played a final here (ODI World Cup 2023) but did not win. Today, that gap has been filled.”

Discussing the pitch conditions, Bumrah noted, “I knew the wicket was quite flat, so I had to utilize all my experience. Before this tournament, I felt I was trying too hard. I was bowling well, but perhaps overexerting myself. In this tournament, I allowed the match to come to me, and that approach worked well. Assessing my strengths has always been crucial for me. Becoming ‘Player of the Match’ in a World Cup final at my home ground is unparalleled.”

He further elaborated on his slower deliveries, attributing his success to experience. “I’ve played on flat wickets here before and observed other teams. I learned that trying to bowl too fast makes it easier for batsmen to play shots. Therefore, I bowled wisely, trying to understand what the batsmen wanted to do.”

Regarding the bowling unit, Bumrah stated, “Whenever we discuss strategies, everyone brings options to the table. We communicated well when needed. We never showed panic and remained calm under pressure. Teams that do this win tournaments, and I’m glad we did the same.”

In the final, India batted first, scoring 255 runs for the loss of five wickets, thanks to half-centuries from Sanju Samson (89), Abhishek Sharma (52), and Ishan Kishan (54). In response, New Zealand was bowled out for just 159 runs in 19 overs.
