Mumbai, March 13: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the state-run telecom operator, has successfully activated 96,103 4G sites for customers across India. These sites utilize indigenous technology developed by a consortium led by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). This group also includes Tejas Networks, another Tata Group company, along with C-DoT (Centre for Development of Telematics). BSNL aims to operationalize a total of 100,000 4G sites throughout the country.
In addition, BSNL is planning to expand its network further, pending cabinet approval. TCS is optimistic about securing additional contracts with the state-run telecom operator. The initial target of 100,000 sites is just the beginning, as more 4G sites and the rollout of 5G technology are essential for BSNL to remain competitive.
Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, confirmed in a written response to the Lok Sabha that BSNL has installed 97,906 4G sites nationwide, with 96,103 currently operational.
“The initiative is designed to enhance telecom services and broaden high-speed connectivity across the nation,” the minister stated. He also discussed the relief package announced by the government to support BSNL’s growth.
Sekhar mentioned, “To assist the company, we have approved three revival packages totaling approximately Rs 3.22 lakh crore.” As part of this relief package, the government has allocated spectrum to BSNL in various bands, including 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2500 MHz, and 3300 MHz, all at the spectrum-discovered price. According to the minister, these relief packages are already yielding positive results, as BSNL has reported operating profits since FY21.
